Free Write 4/4/13

Today is thursday, the last day of the school week for me! Finally! This weekend I'm taking one of my brothers friends youth hunting since my brother is to old to youth hunt now. Yesterday I saw three toms all by thereselves at the place I'm taking him this weekend. That means they should be pretty easy to call in. I hope anyway. The good thing about youth season is you can hunt all day. Even though I have to work on saturday I'll still be able to take him a good portion of the day. From sun up till about 9:30 then about 2:00 till dark and then just the morning on sundlay, but hopefully we can get the job done on saturday morning. I'm actually excited to take the kid, I think it's because I would much rather call one up for someone than shoot one myself. I guess I'm weird or something, I don't know. I really don't have much to talk about anymore, I seem to talk about the same thing every time I do one of these.

This weekend is youth turkey season. My brother is to old this year or I would be taking him. Instead I am taking one of his friends. I want him to kill a nice turkey but I don't want him to kill the biggest. I'm sure that's selfish but at least I'm taking the kid to my spot. It's my grandpas property that I'll be taking him to. It's got a mixture of river bottoms, and large hardwood timber, they are doing some logging down by the river but I'm hoping there will still be birds out there. I drove by last night and saw three toms all by themselves without any hens so if I get on that group it should be pretty easy to call them in. For my turkey hunting is about fooling the old tom, calling him into your set up without him busting you, don't get me wrong I like to shoot them as well, calling them in is just more of my passion. The turkeys may not be roosting on his place but in youth season you can hunt them all day so at some point during the day I will find one for him. The only thing I worry about is his gun not performing like it should. I know how my gun will shoot therefor I know all my distances, but since I have never seen his gun, or seen the pattern and the way it shoots then I'm just going to cross my fingers that it will kill one out to forty yards in case the bird hangs up or something.

Free Write 3/26/13

Oh this is going to be a long week. Work is just awful right now we have cattle dropping like fly's because of the weather changing so much. The cattle that aren't dieing have decided to go through every single fence possible and it's just not been a fun couple of days. Even though it tuesday it feels like it should be the weekend already. I just want it to warm up to where I'm not freezing at work or sweating either. I just want to work with a t-shirt on and the windows down while I feed. I would probably be the happiest guy in the world. I bet I sound like a big cry baby haha. Oh well I guess I can complain from time to time. On the bright side turkey season starts in like fifteen days or something like that! I can't wait to give an old tom a dirt nap. The only thing I'm worried about is with the drastically changing weather we've been having I'm afraid that it will affect there breeding cycle and during the season the toms won't be trying to breed. I could be way wrong, I'm just hoping that I am. I think the best season I ever witnessed was the spring of 2008. Everyone i knew killed a turkey. I shot my bird in youth season and it ended  up being the 11th biggest all time in missouri, by NWTF standards.

Free Write: 3/5/13

It's so close to spring I can already hear the turkeys gobbling. You know I wonder if you actually read these and get tired of me writing about hunting all the time. Oh well, it's my passion so I'm not to worried about it. haha. Lastnight I went to my girlfriend's house and she fell asleep for like 3 hours, she wouldn't wake up so I just went to sleep also. Yesterday at work I drove a tractor and fed hay for seven hours straight. It's nice when we can put out hay with a truck and a Deweze bed but it's just to wet right now I would be stuck in no time. Yesterday really wasn't all that bad other than it just seemed to drag on, after I was done feeding I had to wash the tractor because it was filthy. The boss likes to keep things pretty. I guess if I spent 56,000 on a tractor I would want it to be pretty also. I powerwashed the tractor so that wasn't too bad. On the plus side it was really nice yesterday. I even had to turn the air conditioner on in the tractor. Which smelled awful because of the dirt and manure dust that was in the vents. I'm thinking about looking into some snow goose decoys and a call. I've been seeing them around this year more than ever and I think it would be really cool to hunt them. I mean I hunt every other type of waterfowl so why not just hunt them too. They're kind of an ugly bird, not very attractive looking if you were going to eat them. They band alot of them so that's the main reason I want to hunt them. They even put radio callers on them. I think that would be awesone to just see. Waterfowl are very interesting animals.

Free Write 2/19/13

I don't know if I'm going ot be able to complete this entire ten minute free write, I feel like I could pass out just typing. I worked at fifteen hour shift yesterday, got eight hours of sleep and still am tired. I guess I can't complain to much though I am making pretty good money for an eighteen year old kid. It just burns up pretty quick with all the driving I have to do. I honestly don't know what I'm going to write about. Oh, I thought of something. I have started getting my tractor tuned back up from sitting in the shop for almost a year, for the pulling season. Other than hunting and fishing, tractor pulling is what gets me. To be on top of a thirty year old machine that you have turned up way way way above stock, running down the track at about eighty miles and hour on a tractor! You can feel the RPM's climb when you hit the water injection, watch the smoke turn from white to pitch black raw unburned fuel because your turning about twice what the motor would if it was stock still. If it's dark enough when I pull it throws a blue flame out the exhaust. It has been repainted twice because the motor get's so hot it peels the paint.

Free Write 2/14/13

Today is Valentines day. I wish I was cuddled up with that certain speacial someone this morning but I have to fill my brain with knowledge, oh well. Yesterday wasn't to bad of a day. I got to work about 7:45 and loaded the feed truck and headed off to go feed. Everything went smoothly until I got to one of our farms called J highway. Everything was flooded and with a ton of feed on the back I didn't think anything about being stuck. I pulled up to the feed troughs and I could feel the truck sinking just sitting there. I got the grain out and fed just fine, but when I went to turn around on the other side of the troughs well it sunk to the axle. A 1/4 ton truck with a ton of feed on the back really doesn't get around all that great. Well when I started backing up and going forward I was slowly inching my way out. After about thirty minutes of spinning and rapping a motor out in first gear I finally pulled out of the sink hole. Oh, and I burned a 1/4 tank of gas just spinning, the rooster tails of mud were going 30-40 yards. But after that the day went smoothly and it was all in all a great day.

Free Write 2/12/13

Today is Tuesday and I am beat. Not to mention it's a 7:00 a.m. class. Which means I have to wake up at 5:30 after going to see my girlfriend until 11 which was a terrible idea. I was tired at 5 when I drove up there and just never should have went up there. Anyway enough with the complaining. There is roughly 62 days until turkey season opens!! I've been doing some research and I think I'm going to take a kid youth hunting at Compton Hollow Conservation Area in Northview MO that way I don't have to let him hunt all my good spots. I don't think there will be all that many people there since it will only be youth season. I'm hoping so anyway. The information online says that it has a good turkey population so hopefully I can get him on his first bird. Don't get me wrong I love to deer hunt, mostly with a bow. But birds seem to be what get me. From ducks, and geese, to a gobbling tom way up high on a ridge, running in to your gun barrel and feeling the ground shake when he lets out one of those majestic gobbles. There really is a feeling like no other. I think why I like to bird hunt so much is they are so much more vocal than deer. You call to ducks, geese, and turkey to get them in but deer you pretty much just sit and wait for them to walk by you.

Free Write 1/31/13

Well yesterday at work was just awful. The worst day I think I have ever had there. I starting feeding hay when I get there and it's spitting snow and raining and it's 25 degrees and the wind chill is like ten. Then I get a call that we have some cattle out at one of our propety's. So me and the other farm hand go over there with fencing supplies and everything we need. We get there and we find the heifers. We finally get them back in, and we start to fix the fence where they might have gotten out. Then I look up and there is 5 more out. So we get them back in and we try to do a head count on the group. We're 6 short.

Free Write 1/29/13

Today is Tuesday January 29th, 2013. It's so nice outside! I get to be cooped up all day inside learning. Yesterday at work it was almost this warm and I  went to work in a t-shirt and never got cold. It's reminding me of what spring is like. That means spring turkey season is right around the corner! It's definetly one of my favorite seasons to hunt in, to walk up to a quiet patch of timber, let out a hoot on your owl call, and watch the woods come alive with gobbles. Then pick the turkey you want to go after, and actually fool and old tom into thinking you're a real hen that wants to buddy up, if you know what I mean. I think a wild turkey is the most beautiful bird ever created, they have such powerful vocals, you can be forty yards from a turkey when it gobbles and it will still shake the ground.

Free Write 1/24/13

Well today is Thursday. Why does this class have to be so early? It would be nice if it started at like 830 or 900 instead of 700! Oh well I'll live i guess. Yesterday I worked most of the day but got off early because my boss wanted to go fishing so he called it quits for the day. I fed a couple bales of hay and then went and worked some cattle and then hauled them and then fed a little more hay and headed back to the house. I ate lunch really quick and then headed up to Bolivar to see my girlfriend. It was so nice to see her, she's such a sweetheart and I'm a lucky guy! I can genuinely say that, I've been in relationships before but never like this, she's got me wrapped around her pretty little finger. Well enough of the mushy crap. I'm ready for turkey season already, the only thing I have left to get is a red dot scope and a saddle mount for my 870 super mag. I thought I would try out the red dot one year to see how i like it you never know i might fall in love! The only bad part is I have to take it off for waterfowl season and then re-sight it before turkey season every year  but I think if I like it then it will be worth it. To hear a mature tom gobbling his head off on the top of a ridge in the middle of a beautiful spring morning is breath taking. Shooting a turkey isn't what excites me, I mean sure it's nice but the fun part is fooling and old tom into thinking you're a real hen and then when you get him fired up enough to where he comes running into the end of your gun barrel is awesome! There is nothing funner than chasing old weary toms in the middle of the spring woods.

Well today is thursday. its cold outside. i worked all day yesterday, from sunup to sundown it was freezing all day, but the good part is most of the day i was in the truck feeding hay and grain. then when i got off i went to  my girlfriends house in boolivar and saw her until about eleven lastnight then i came home and went to bed. the sleep that i did get was ok but still having to wake up was awful. this morning class stuff is for the birds, especially when you still work a full time job. i mean i love my job and i look forward to what ii do everyday but its a litle over bearing especially when yhou are trying to study for finals. bbut it pays good and i actually like it so i guess i cant conplain. today i leave this crap place at two fifteen. and i still have a hour and a half lunch break! that's not to bad i dont think. well im slowly running out of things to type about because myeyes are about to snap shut. i bet if i closed my eyes for one minute i would be asleep. there is alot of noise in this classroom from all the typing. its kind of cool to listen to, to be honest. there are some weird people at otc, mainly just old strange people that you wouldn't expect to be attending college. i miss highschool alot. it was so easy then. the teachers actually cared more about how you did and i knew everyone there. i played sports and was in ffa. my senior year of football, game 6 against reedspring highschool i dislocated my patella to the worst extent possible. i was on  a rol.

Tyler Rear: Introduction 1/15/13

Hi, my name is Tyler Rear. I'm 19 years old and live in Marshfield MO. I live to hunt and fish, I go waterfowl hunting, turkey hunting, and deer hunting. I also fly fish at bennet springs. I grew up on a farm. We have 120 registered brangus cow calf pairs. 22 of those cows are mine. I work at Menzies Cattle Company as a farm hand. I feed hay and grain all day to contract dairy heifers, and from time to time vaccanat them also. Right now I'm going to OTC just for my general education. I plan to transfer to Linn Tech in Linn MO and get my degree in Electrical Distrubution Systems, also known as a High Wire Powerlinesman. I want that job because I would get to be outsided all day. The benefits are great and the money isn't bad either. I went to Harrisburg Arkansas this winter on a guided duck hunt. I had never duck hunted out of state so this was an experience. We hunted for two days and only ended up with 8 birds. It was extremely slow hunting. Our guide said it was because most of the waterfowl had already made it down into mexico. On the bright side of the trip, I got the chance to practice my calling with a proffesional from RNT calls. We saw from 60,000-80,000 snow geese while we were there. We hunted a pit blind in a flooded rice field, and we went on a flooded Timber hunt which was my favorite. I had a pretty great winter break from college.

Today is tuesday the first day of my second semester of college. it sucks so far. i really dont want to be here. i wish i was in a duck blind somewhere or working. yes, i said working. i work for a business called menzies cattle company. i driove around allday in a feed truck and feed commercial dairy heifers. easy job until i have to get outside the truck then its a muddy mess. the only part of the job that sucks is the cold and working cattle. for some reason it seems like dairy cattle are alot harder to work than beef cattle, its almost like they are dumber or something. we have some beef cows in the company but we hardly ever work them. i realy wish i was hunting. it doesnt matter how cold it is. i wish i was sitting in a duck blind drinking coffee and watching mallards pile into my decoy spread. this year has  been one of the best for us as duck hunters. were getting up close to 200 birds. considering last year we weere only at like 35 at the end of the season. still no banded birds though. this year i went to harrisburg arkansas on a duck hunt and had high hopes of killing a banded duck. but there just wasnt many birds down there and we had trouble finding them, but i shot some of the prettiest mallards ive ever seen. the other day we were hunting at a little farm pond i own and we killed a mallard gadwall cross. it had everything a mallard hen would have but its belly was white like a gadwall. and the duck was really little. then we shot two mallard hens and a mallard drake. and a canadian goose. the goose was awesome to watch. weve killed a few of them but not many and its always a treat because you get 3 times as much meat off of them. im really excited for turkey season. i have a few new spots to hunt this year. and im getitng a red dot scope for my shotgun. im also going to try a new brand of shlls. in 2009 i killed a tom that  is ranked 11th for alltime in the state of missouri.
